How well I know the fount that freely flows
Although ‘tis night!

                  II

The eternal fount its source has never show’d.
But well I know wherein is its abode,
Although ‘tis night!

                  III

Its origin I know not—it has none:
All other origins are here begun,
Although ‘tis night!

                  IV

I know that naught beside can be so fair,
That heav’ns and earth drink deep refreshment there,
Although ‘tis night!

                  V

Well know I that its depths can no man plumb
Nor, fording it, across it hope to come,
Although ‘tis night!

                  VI

Never was fount so clear, undimm’d and bright:
From it alone, I know, proceeds all light,
Although ‘tis night!

                  VII

Rich are its streams and full - this know I well;
They water nations, heav'ns and depths of hell,
Although ‘tis night!

                  VIII

Yea, more I know: the stream that hence proceeds,
Omnipotent, suffices for all needs,
Although ‘tis night!

                  IX

From fount and stream another stream forth
flows
And this, I know, as powerful as those –
Although ‘tis night!

                  X

The eternal fount is hidden in living bread,
That we with life eternal may be fed,
Although ‘tis night!

                  XI

Here to all creatures it is crying hark!
That they should drink their fill though in the dark,
For it is night.

                  XII

This living fount which is to me so dear
Within the bread of life I see it clear
Although ‘tis night!
