STROKE OF ONE
From the dark tower which is a ship's mast
the stroke of One
slips down through the night like the body of one drowned.
On the blackboard the stroke of One
inscribes its scrawl.
Glassy-eyed houses dive into the night.
Tails between their legs, the prowling dogs
howl at the stroke of One
as at a dead man.
